“A community of faith providing nurture, strength, & direction for living today in God’s world.”

From the Interim Pastor’s Pen:

This month brings the end to my role as your interim pastor and the end to a partnership that has been enormously gratifying.  As I write the details of my next position are unknown, but I trust as God has led me to this wonderful faith community, I will be led to my next.

During the month of July there will be continued activity to prepare for the arrival of your new pastor, Linda Even.  The pastor’s office will be spruced up, files of orientation materials will be prepared, and a special worship service of welcome will take place on August 5th.  The “preparation” time is nearly behind you and soon you will be living into a new relationship as pastor and congregation.

Let me suggest a few activities and attitudes that have expressed support to pastors and encourage you to practice these in your new relationship with Linda.

Pray for your pastor

It has meant a great deal to me to hear some of you tell me that you were praying for me.  Continue this practice of prayer.  Presently Linda is selling a home in Cincinnati and maneuvering through the massive relocation process.  Prayers are welcomed even now.

Communicate repeatedly and honestly

Take the initiative to provide Linda with information that will help her be a good leader.  She will be learning hundreds of names and hundreds of details about the United Church.  It is okay to repeat information and essential that information be communicated honestly.

Affirm your pastor’s time away

Pastoral ministry is demanding as there will always be people to visit, messages to prepare and meetings to attend.  Regular times of relaxation and rejuvenation are crucial to wellbeing and longevity.  Encourage and affirm Linda’s times away from ministry.

Say thank you

As you appreciate Linda’s work among you tell her so.

It is with thanks that I conclude this, my final monthly article and close with the words of the Apostle Paul in his letter to the church at Philippi:

1If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. 3Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. 4Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.

June 3rd Youth Sunday and Celebration of Lord’s Supper

Youth are the “future of our church," some say. Without missing a beat, a well-informed youth will reply, "Wrong! We are part of the church today."  Children and youth are fully a part of the church. Worship engages all people as worshipers and in roles of worship leadership, based on their gifts rather than age.  Youth are indeed the church of tomorrow and today and yesterday — as are all God’s people!   What do they mean by their theme of a “complaint free world?”  Come and find out!

A Time of Passage with Kathleen Waters – Sun. June 17th10:25 AM

Sunday, June 17th will be Kathleen Waters’ last Sunday with us.  We will celebrate her and acknowledge her time as Interim Pastor at UCF since September 2004!

When Kathleen Waters came to be our Interim Pastor on September 12th, 2004 there was a “Litany of Welcome.”  We as a congregation agreed to hold in trust her walking stick and shepherd’s crook, as a sign of the interim and pastoral nature of her ministry.  When she leaves, we agreed to return it that she may carry it to her next congregation.  It has served as a reminder that she has been in our midst to build bridges to the next pastor.  We gave her keys to the church as a sign of our commitment to her as Interim Pastor for her to use them as she served us and to return them as she departs, having helped us prepare for our future and our installed Pastor.

On June 17th, The Litany of Farewell for concluding an Interim Pastorate is an important part of the interim task; there can be no new beginning until there has been an ending and a new direction.  We will exchange symbols in worship to mark our new relationship.  It is a time of rejoicing as we remember and give thanks for her faithful service and leadership among us as interim pastor.  We will pray for God’s warmest blessing on her and her ongoing ministry in other churches.

Join us June 17th to honor Kathleen Waters at a reception after the service!

Hatt’s off!

United Church has a wonderful group of volunteer music leaders who guide our children, youth and adults in many music making opportunities every week throughout the school year!  On Sunday, May 13th we recognized in worship the volunteer leadership of:

Judy Spencer, Wendy VanSlyke,  Cherub Choir;

Jim Spencer, Sarah Vonhof, Children’s Choir;

Sul-young Choi, Youth Handbell Choir assistant;

Barbara Morison, Joyful Sign Choir

Thank you to all the choir members for their faithful participation and for making a joyful song/sign to the Lord at United Church this year! Watch for summer music choir sign-up sheets for Women’s Chorus, Men’s Chorus, ensembles, and Summer Handbells!

Thank you Jim Spencer & Syracuse University Brass Ensemble

A wonderful benefit “Spring Pops Concert” was heard in our UCF sanctuary on Saturday, May 19th!  We have a treasure here in our midst with the concerts that Jim Spencer’s SU Brass Ensemble brings to United Church.  The program was very interesting as usual with much variety and it was superbly played. If you missed it, there was music for everyone to enjoy!  After the National Anthem, I especially enjoyed the William Mathias festive opening piece, “Vivat Regina.”  It was a special treat for us to hear Jim and Sarah Spencer play John Denver’s song, “Perhaps Love,” a beautiful euphonium duet with the full ensemble.  Having Laura Enslin as vocal soloist with the two Bach pieces were other wonderful highlights of the evening.  They will soon (unfortunately) run out of British composer Kenneth Alford’s marches; they have been popular with the audiences!   A thrilling rendition of the “Poet and Peasant” Overture by Von Suppe was an exciting ending to an enjoyable spring evening.

I appreciate the talents and gift to the church and community that Jim and the SU Brass Ensemble bring to United Church.  Extend your thanks to him on behalf of the church!  Also a special thank you to Beth Krauss, the committee, and staff for the work they did to organize the many aspects of putting on the concert as a fundraiser for United Church mission support!

A letter from Maqsood Kamil –

Dear friends,

Greetings.  It is with heavy heart that I am writing to you to join us in prayer for Pakistani Christians. Christians living in two cities of NWFP, Charsada, and Mardan have received written threats that they must covert to Islam or face the consequences. The dead line is May 17. We are setting apart 17-27 as days of prayer and fasting as Christians are coming repeatedly under fire from the Pakistani Talebans.

Even more tragic is the news that a bill from MMA, hard line religious parties, have been presented in the national assembly, seeking death penalty for the apostates, those who will covert from Islam to any other religion. This is very bad news. The Bill has been handed over the standing committee of the national Assembly. It is unlikely that any party will resist it. This will be a clear infringement on basic human rights of individuals. Please join us in prayer and fasting. Pray that we may remain faithful to our Lord even until death. God bless you.

Love,

Maqsood Kamil
