UNITED CHURCH NEWS

June, 2005                                                                                                         Issue 6

“A community of faith providing nurture, strength, and direction for living today in God’s world.”

From the Interim Pastor’s Pen:

Last week I join a number of clergy for a discussion of an article focusing on why certain “mainline” churches are growing and others are not.  The article shared the good news of congregations that are increasing their membership, taking risks and involved in intentional outreach efforts.  It also referred to research suggesting why these churches were growing.  What I discovered was quite interesting.

Deborah Bruce and Cynthia Woolever used research from the U.S. Congregational Life Survey – a study of more than 300,000 people in the U.S. who attended worship one weekend in April 2001.  The survey involved more than 2,200 congregations from more than 50 faith groups.  From this research Bruce and Woolever propose that congregations that focus on strengths, finding what their particular church does well and building on those strengths, is more productive than trying to diagnose what is wrong and fixing it.

Their research also reveals that there are no quick fixes or magic bullets to church growth.  There is not one all-purpose solution for congregations that want to be stronger.  Bruce states that unfortunately, “Some churches think if they can just get 250 people their problems will be solved. Or a church thinks everything will be fine if it starts a contemporary service or hires the right pastor.”

Bruce suggests that although there are no quick fixes to congregational growth, “strong congregations do share certain distinct strengths, strong congregations provide a sense of community, educate people about the faith, share their faith with others, serve others in their congregations and communities, and convey ‘the sense that life has meaning.’”[1]

We at the United Church have been in the process of discerning what strengths are true for our faith community and mapping out a plan to build on those strengths.  During our worship/congregational meeting on June 5 you will have the opportunity to hear the report of the New Vision Team and participate through your vote and actions to move forward to build up our church. If you haven’t done so already, pick up a copy of the New Vision Team report and read it prior to worship on the 5th.

During our worship/congregational meeting on June 5 you will also hear the recommendations from your Nominating Committee for members to the Pastoral Search and Nominating Committee.  Both your Mission Study Plan and selection of your PSNC are important to your finding and electing an installed pastor.  I hope you we be there.

Please note that the congregational meeting will be during our normal worship time at 10:25 AM so come expectantly as we blend our worship of God and our work for God.

See you on June 5th!

June 5th Worship

& Our New Vision for Ministry!

Our annual meeting and worship will be woven into one as we gather as Gods people at the table of the Lord. We will celebrate our past by receiving the work and witness of our committees and staff through their annual reports (given out May 22nd).  At every service of worship we listen for Gods word. June 5th we will hear the Gospel lesson from Matthew 5 and a reflection by Kathleen Waters, and a reflection on the New Vision Report, our Mission Study.  We respond to Gods love by presenting our offerings through music, financial gifts, and prayers.  Youth and children will participate and lead us in moving with the spirit!  After the Doxology comes our time of dedication when we will receive the nominating committee report and elect our pastor search and nominating committee.  We will commission the team of 8 who will conduct the search for our new pastor!  The worship concludes as we give thanks to God and celebrate the Lords Supper and come forward to receive communion.  Blest be the tie that binds our hearts in Christian love...... After the closing prayer we go out in Gods name and continue the fellowship and lives of service.

 OUR GRADUATES

Congratulations to Our Graduates!

Five years ago, on June 11, 2000 our current 5 high school graduates were presented by Tracey Kuhns in a Sunday morning Pentecost celebration to confirm their covenant of membership.  The seekers and their mentors were: Chris Baxter - Jim Spencer; Brendan Dunuwila - Nate Emhoff; Lindsey Ensher - Gloria & Scott Manuel; Kevin Gordon - Loren Dawley; Matt Woiler - Andy Baxter.  The celebration was special with a guest preacher, the national moderator of the Presbyterian Church, Dr. Freda Gardner, who was here to also speak at the afternoon Presbytery Pentecost 2000 celebration.  This Seekers class then joined that Sunday afternoon with Presbytery youth for a spirit-filled bi-lingual confirmation service at The Lodge in Skaneateles.  They sang in a combined Youth Choir, and with the congregation, both inside and outside in a tent, accompanied by Alice Hatt, Tony Greene, and the SU Brass Ensemble!  Remember?

On June 12th we will honor our graduates! Join us in worship and wish them well on their next step along the journey of faith and life.

Meet our new member of staff: Lisa Gargano...

The Staff Support/Personnel Committee is pleased to introduce our new Administrative Assistant, Lisa Comstock Gargano!  Lisa is a graduate of G. Ray Bodley High School in Fulton, NY, and received her BS degree at New Hampshire College in Manchester, NH, in Business and a concentration in Materials Management. While living in New England for over twenty years, she worked for a variety of companies including Kerk Motion Products in Hollis, NH, Lawrence Pumps, Inc. in Lawrence, MA and Cargocaire Engineering Corporation in Amesbury, MA.  Her responsibilities as an Administrative Assistant in various departments included customer service, order entry, assistance to managers, purchasing, maintenance of office equipment, selection and installation of new software, clerical and receptionist duties.

Lisa recently returned to NY leaving a wonderful church family and established career to be closer to her aging parents, other family and friends. She sold her home there and recently purchased one in Chittenango.   Lisa describes herself as “family oriented and a very spiritual person.”  At her Community Church in Francestown, NH, she often filled in during the winter months for their church secretary who was a “snowbird”! As a church officer Lisa also served as Clerk for four years and spent two full years as a member of their Pastoral Search Committee. In addition, she was the “secret” person who sent birthday and get well cards to congregants and community members from the church.

Outside of work and church Lisa can be found doing a number of pastimes. She enjoys quilting, gardening, playing the piano and reading.  She loves children and in NH provided safe, loving homes to foster children on a temporary basis as well as respite to other foster families.

Let’s all give Lisa a warm United Church welcome!
