“A community of faith providing nurture, strength, & direction for living today in God’s world.”

ADVENT IN A NEW YEAR

Through the ministry and generosity of our congregation in the twenty-four days of Advent, while we waited for the birth of the Christ-Child, we showed God's true love to people in our congregation and community We responded to people in need of a visit, food, gifts, a song, money, joy, love, hope, & faith.

* Households were "carolled" & Homebound people were included in our Advent prayer partners & gifts were delivered.

* Advent services were offered at Clarebridge.

* 110 families in our community had a more joyous Christmas because of our gifts to the Food Pantry, the Salvation Army

Angel Tree, the Pastor’s Discretionary Fund & other generous giving by       individuals & church groups.

* Retired church workers in the American Baptist & Presbyterian Denominations   were supported by our gifts to the Gratitude & Joy Offerings.

* Refugees in our community were assisted by the Christmas Offering.

*Those in need here & around the world were supported with dignity, respect &     money through our Alternative giving.

* Untold spirits were lifted by Advent and Christmas worship services, by the

Youth Handbell Choir visit to Wynwood, Christmas Pie, the Children’s Musical Pageant, the Christmas Musical Offering, all the marvelous music in worship throughout the season & the Christmas Social.

Now that Love has come again into the world

let us continue as we have begun this new liturgical year,

re-committing ourselves to the ministry of this church by

generously, joyously, faithfully & hopefully

being the faces, hands, heart & feet of that Love

in all that we do and say in the year ahead.

In faith,

Rev. Dr. Linda D.Even

Over the last twenty-five of those years he was pastor of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Fayetteville.  He now spends his time leading workshops and seminars for clergy and laity and developing educational programs for InterFaith Works of Central NY (formerly, IRC). He has been married for over forty years to Joyce Dunn Bresnahan, who continues her long career as a hospice nurse.  Together they have a son and daughter, and five granddaughters. They reside in Manlius.

Jim holds degrees from the City College of New York, with a major
in Latin and Greek; the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Philadelphia; and Colgate-Rochester Divinity School.  He studied for two years as well at the University of Tuebingen in Germany.

Dr.  Even Calling Worship Assistants & Aspiring Worship Assistants

Worship is the central act of our life together.   It is a gathering of the community to praise God and re-center ourselves as the body of Christ.  While worship is not a performance, what we do and how we do it affects the comfort and worship experience of all the participants.

On January 13, following worship, I will lead a class for worship leaders and aspiring worship leaders.  If you have served as liturgist in the past or would like to in the future, please plan to come to this session.  We’ll review: the parts of worship and how they fit together; the new sound system and microphone use; hints about standing, sitting, waiting, and what to do when something unexpected occurs. Together we’ll build confidence and comfort within our worship leadership team.

Please call the office to say you’ll be there, so that there will be sufficient materials and treats available.

Dr. Even works with our Congregational Care Committee and can be reached through the church office (637-3186), at the Watt’s home, or through the elders of the month. Elder for the month of January is Kathy Bohnsack.

Purpose of Elders of the Month: For those members with a crisis, emergency situation, a particular concern or need for care, the elders of the month are available to assist the pastor, when the pastor is unavailable, or when the church office is closed.  Procedure for calling:  Please call the church office weekdays between 9 AM – 3 PM; otherwise call either the pastor or elders of the month.

Worship & Spiritual Life – January 2008

Epiphany Season of Light!

“Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you” (Isaiah 60:1).

Our response to God’s glory is to reflect that light back – from Christmas Eve candles -- “You are the light of the world...let your light shine before others...so they may see...and  give glory to God”  (Matt. 5:14,16)

The Epiphany of the Lord is Sunday, January 6th, or the 12th day of Christmas (the coming of the Magi).  The season after Epiphany (until Ash Wednesday, Feb. 6)  is one of light, of growth, of action.  The color green is used to remind us of growth and new life.

Baptism of the Lord Sunday, Jan. 13th

On Jan. 13th worship will include a time for Baptism Renewal as the congregation is led to “Remember your baptism and be thankful."  Baptism is an act which cannot be repeated. God’s promises to us in baptism are unconditional and everlasting, while our commitment to vows can be wavering.  On this Sunday at the beginning of the new year we join in a time of renewal.  Bishop Desmond Tutu once summarized the Christian faith, making it clear, "There is nothing I can do to make God love me more. And there is nothing I can do to make God love me less."

Human Relations Sunday

On Sunday, Jan. 20th we welcome Rev. Jim Bresnahan to our pulpit.  Our annual Human Relations Sunday in conjunction with the observance of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday, the Worship and Spiritual Life Committee invites a guest preacher.  Human Relations Sunday is observed on the Sunday near Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday, a day when we remember his life and ministry. Martin Luther King used to discuss the bringing about of "the beloved community" where he and those he disagreed with could live as neighbors.  This day calls the Church to recognize the right of all God’s children to realize their potential as human beings in relationship with one another.

As United Church begins its anniversary season in 2008, marking the 75th anniversary of the uniting of the Baptist and Presbyterian Churches in Fayetteville, we will present an award to two church members, called the United Church “Spirit of Peace and Justice” award. These awards will be presented to people who have made a positive difference in the life of UCF and worked for a spirit of peace and justice in our community and the world.

            Brass and Bells Concert

The concert was postponed due to inclement weather on Dec. 16th and is now rescheduled for Sunday, January 6th at 7 PM, Jim Spencer and the SU Brass Ensemble, with both our Adult and Youth Handbell Choirs will present a concert to end the Christmas season and 12 days of Christmas. A freewill offering will be received for Refugee Assistance.  You are also invited to bring items for the FM Food Pantry.  Thanks to Cindy Burke, the Steeple Music Series, for coordinating arrangements and to Gloria Manuel for the newspaper publicity.

Hymn Writing Contest -- 75th Anniversary Celebration!

The United Church of Fayetteville announces a contest for hymn writers as part of their 75th Anniversary Celebration. The selected hymn will be based on our congregational "Vision for Ministry" (see below) and will both honor the past and look forward to the future. The theme of the anniversary celebration is “A Tapestry of Grace".

Nearly 75 years ago in 1933, the Presbyterian (PCUSA, dating from 1829) and American Baptist (dating from 1831) churches of Fayetteville, New York united to become a single congregation while remaining tied to both denominations.  We have experienced unity under God within the diversity of gifts and thinking that such a union produces.  We have tried to be a living example of Jesus' wish in his prayer, "May they be one, so that the world will believe that you sent me."  (John 17:21).  We welcome all persons regardless of age, race, gender, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation or differing abilities, and seek to include everyone in all aspects of the life and leadership of this church.

In 2005 the congregation participated in a mission study in ministry and developed "A Vision for Ministry" based on a study of the Beatitudes and Isaiah 61:1-2.

"The United Church of Fayetteville is a welcoming, inclusive community of faith that demonstrates Christ's love by seeking justice and nourishing each person's spiritual journey. With God's help, we seek to realize this vision through vibrant worship, caring fellowship, challenging study, open and democratic governance, and active partnerships in mission and service -- locally, nationally and internationally."

The hymn's debut will take place during the 75th anniversary worship service March 30, 2008.
The prize will be the honor of having the hymn played and sung at the anniversary worship service plus a certificate for dinner for two at The Arad Evans Inn, a historic Fayetteville restaurant.  (7206 E. Genesee St., Fayetteville, NY,
www.aradevansinn.com)  Three generations of the Arad Evans family were active in the Fayetteville Presbyterian Church in the 19th century.

o        The hymn writing contest is a search for a new text, incorporating the use of an easily sung meter, using a familiar hymn tune.  New music for the winning hymn may be sought in the future.  Hymns previously published or currently entered in other contests should not be submitted.

o        We suggest avoiding archaic language (e.g. "Which wert, and art, and evermore shalt be") and non-inclusive language (e.g. "O brother man, fold to thy heart thy brother").

o        The contest will be "blind" and open to anyone who is familiar with our church history, mission and goals.

o        Entrants should provide two copies of each hymn.  The entrant's name must not appear on these copies.  Please provide a cover letter with your name, address, telephone number, email address and the title of your entry or entries.

o        All entries must be postmarked by January 15, 2008. All entries will be acknowledged within two weeks of receipt.

o        The judges will arrive at their decision by February 15, 2008.  The winning hymn will be announced by February 29, 2008.  Only one winning entry is anticipated.  Each entrant will receive notification of the contest winner and a copy of the winning hymn.  Copyright for the winning hymn will be retained by the author, but the author agrees to permit the use of this hymn by the United Church in perpetuity.

Please mail entries to the church office marked:
Hymn Contest, The United Church, 310 East Genesee St., Fayetteville, NY 13066.

I.  Adult Forums [Meet in Beard Lounge]

Forums are presentations and discussions which focus on timely topics of Christian social concern, personal and spiritual development, Bible study, exploration of our Christian heritage, and study of world religions.  Through Forums we seek to provide a place for understanding special topics or current issues of our Christian presence in the community and world.

January 6:  Rev. Dr. Linda Even: "A Spiritual Genogram.”  Dr. Even will discuss a "family systems theory" way to talk about the people and events which shape personal theology and spiritual perspectives.

January 13:  Denny Baldwin (church member and practicing attorney) and Prof. William M. Wiecek from the SU Law School will discuss the role and influence of Christianity on the American legal system, past and present.

January 20: Presentation by the United Church Anniversary Committee, giving an overview of celebration plans for 2008.

January 27: Dr. Joe Julian (retired professor from the Maxwell School of Syracuse University, and member of the Church and Society Committee of the United Church) will present an examination of the United States’ global role: Where do we go from here?

II. Bible Study in Women’s Lounge  [Meets in Women’s Lounge]

9:00 AM. Led by Fred Davey (church member and retired professor at Upstate Medical University) and Jason Larson (church member and PhD student in the SU Dept. of Religion), this relatively small group engages in in-depth study and discussion of a book of the Bible or biblical theme using a study guide.  The group is currently studying the Gospel of Matthew, using the study guide “Matthew” by Tom Wright.  Newcomers are always welcome.

III.  A Parents’ Place  [Meets on the basement level in Room 5]

9:15 AM.  A Parents Place provides an opportunity for informal, unstructured conversation about the joys and challenges of raising children.  Coffee and tea are available.

IV. Saving Jesus This DVD-based discussion group will resume on Wednesday evenings during Lent 2008 (not Sundays, as previously noted). “Saving Jesus” is a sequel to the “Living the Questions” series which was offered during fall 2006 and Lent 2007.  In November 2007, we viewed the first 5 parts of this 12-part series. The series is described as follows:  Saving Jesus is a DVD-based small group exploration of Jesus Christ for the third millennium.  The basic format for each weekly 1 to 1½ hour session includes a 20-minute video segment and guided discussion. Join Marcus Borg, John Dominic Crossan, Matthew Fox, Amy-Jill Levine, James Forbes and many others for a conversation around the relevance of Jesus Christ for today.”

We will be accepting donations of soup and bread on Saturday, January 5th from 10-11 AM in the church kitchen, where the soup and bread will be packaged to sell the next day. PAST EVENTS

Youth Bake Sale: Thanks to all those who supported the youth program by donating and purchasing baked goods during our bake sale on November 18th. The youth had fun baking at the church the night before at the lock-in in preparation for the bake sale. Proceeds from the sale will be used to fund our Nightwatch trip to St. John of the Divine’s Cathedral in NYC in February.

Youth Coffeehouse: Thanks to all those who attended the Coffeehouse on November 24th to see some of our UCF youth perform. A special thanks to Richard Blumenthal, Lizzy Price, and Rachel Mou-Thiel for their performances that night. We are blessed with such talented youth at our church. And we especially appreciate those who volunteered their time in planning, setting up, baking, and cleaning up that night which allowed the event possible to be possible in the first place. $100 of the money raised that night went toward the youth fund in support of our youth program.

Other fundraisers: We also want to thank all those who supported the youth program by purchasing advent wreaths and candles, luminaries, and Enjoy the City Books. It often seems that we are perpetually trying to sell you things. We appreciate your continued support of our efforts to raise the money necessary to undertake the special trips and events that we plan for our youth. We feel that these events, while often expensive, are an important part of our youth programming and hope that they will provide opportunities to spur spiritual growth for our teenagers either by exposing them to new people and ideas or by giving them a chance to serve the needs of others.
