“A community of
faith providing nurture, strength, & direction for living today in God’s
world.”
ADVENT IN A NEW YEAR
Through the ministry and generosity of our
congregation in the twenty-four days of Advent, while we waited for the birth
of the Christ-Child, we showed God's true love to people in our congregation and
community We responded to people in need of a visit, food, gifts, a song, money,
joy, love, hope, & faith.
* Households were "carolled" & Homebound people were included in our Advent
prayer partners & gifts were delivered.
* Advent services were offered at Clarebridge.
* 110 families in our
community had a more joyous Christmas because of our gifts to the Food Pantry,
the Salvation Army
Angel Tree, the Pastor’s Discretionary
Fund & other generous giving by individuals
& church groups.
* Retired church workers in the American Baptist
& Presbyterian Denominations were
supported by our gifts to the Gratitude & Joy Offerings.
* Refugees in our community were assisted by the
Christmas Offering.
*Those in need here & around the world were
supported with dignity, respect & money through our Alternative giving.
* Untold spirits were lifted by Advent and
Christmas worship services, by the
Youth
Handbell Choir visit to Wynwood, Christmas Pie, the Children’s Musical Pageant,
the Christmas Musical Offering, all the
marvelous music in worship throughout the season & the Christmas Social.
Now that Love has come again into the world
let us continue as we have begun this new
liturgical year,
re-committing ourselves to the ministry of this
church by
generously, joyously, faithfully & hopefully
being the faces, hands, heart & feet of that
Love
in all that we do and say in the year ahead.

Dr. Even Calling Worship Assistants & Aspiring
Worship Assistants
Worship is the central act
of our life together. It is a gathering
of the community to praise God and re-center ourselves as the body of
Christ. While worship is not a
performance, what we do and how we do it affects the comfort and worship
experience of all the participants.
On January 13, following worship, I will lead a class for
worship leaders and aspiring worship leaders.
If you have served as liturgist in the past or would like to in the
future, please plan to come to this session.
We’ll review: the parts of worship and how they fit together; the new
sound system and microphone use; hints about standing, sitting, waiting, and
what to do when something unexpected occurs. Together we’ll build confidence
and comfort within our worship leadership team.
Please call the office to
say you’ll be there, so that there will be sufficient materials and treats
available.
Dr. Even works
with our Congregational Care Committee and can be reached through the church
office (637-3186), at the Watt’s home, or through the elders of the month. Elder for the month of January is Kathy
Bohnsack.
Purpose of Elders of the Month: For those members with a crisis, emergency situation, a
particular concern or need for care, the elders of the month are available to
assist the pastor, when the pastor is unavailable, or when the church office is
closed. Procedure for calling:

Epiphany Season of Light!
“Arise, shine; for your light has come, and
the glory of the Lord has risen upon you” (Isaiah 60:1).
Our
response to God’s glory is to reflect that light back – from Christmas Eve
candles -- “You are the light of the world...let your light shine before
others...so they may see...and give
glory to God” (Matt. 5:14,16)
The Epiphany of the Lord is Sunday, January
6th, or the 12th day of Christmas (the coming of the
Magi). The season after Epiphany (until
Ash Wednesday, Feb. 6) is one of light,
of growth, of action. The color green is
used to remind us of growth and new life.

Baptism of the Lord Sunday,
Jan. 13th
On Jan.
13th worship will include a time for Baptism Renewal as the
congregation is led to “Remember your baptism and be thankful." Baptism is an act which cannot be repeated.
God’s promises to us in baptism are unconditional and everlasting, while our
commitment to vows can be wavering. On
this Sunday at the beginning of the new year we join in a time of renewal. Bishop Desmond Tutu
once summarized the Christian faith, making it clear, "There is nothing I
can do to make God love me more. And there is nothing I can do to make God love
me less."
Human Relations Sunday
On Sunday, Jan. 20th we
welcome Rev. Jim Bresnahan to our pulpit.
Our annual Human Relations Sunday in conjunction with the observance of
Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday, the Worship and Spiritual Life Committee
invites a guest preacher. Human
Relations Sunday is observed on the Sunday near Martin Luther King, Jr.’s
birthday, a day when we remember his life and ministry. Martin Luther King used
to discuss the bringing about of "the beloved community" where he and
those he disagreed with could live as neighbors. This day calls the Church to recognize the
right of all God’s children to realize their potential as human beings in
relationship with one another.

Hymn Writing Contest -- 75th Anniversary Celebration!
The
United Church of Fayetteville announces a contest for hymn writers as part of
their 75th Anniversary Celebration. The selected hymn will be based on our
congregational "Vision for
Ministry" (see below) and will both honor the past and look forward to
the future. The theme of the anniversary celebration is “A Tapestry of Grace".
Nearly 75 years ago in 1933, the Presbyterian (PCUSA, dating from 1829)
and American Baptist (dating from 1831) churches of
In 2005 the congregation participated in a mission study in ministry and developed "A Vision for
Ministry" based on a study of the Beatitudes and Isaiah 61:1-2.

The hymn writing contest is a search for a new text, incorporating the use of an
easily sung meter, using a familiar hymn
tune. New music for the winning hymn may be sought in the future.
Hymns previously published or currently entered in other contests should
not be submitted.

We suggest avoiding archaic language (e.g. "Which wert,

brother man, fold to thy heart thy brother").

The contest will be "blind" and open to anyone who
is familiar with our church history, mission and goals.

Entrants should provide two copies of each hymn. The entrant's name must not appear on these

Jesus” This DVD-based discussion group will resume on Wednesday evenings
during Lent 2008 (not Sundays, as previously noted). “Saving Jesus” is a
sequel to the “Living the Questions” series which was offered during fall 2006
and Lent 2007. In November 2007, we
viewed the first 5 parts of this 12-part series. The series is described as follows: “Saving Jesus is a DVD-based small group
exploration of Jesus Christ for the third millennium. The basic format for each weekly 1 to 1½ hour
session includes a 20-minute video segment and guided discussion. Join Marcus
Borg, John Dominic Crossan, Matthew Fox, Amy-Jill Levine, James Forbes and many
others for a conversation around the relevance of Jesus Christ for today.”

Youth Forum: In November, we focused on New Testament passages related to wealth and
material possessions. In December, we started talking about salvation and the
afterlife. In January, we’ll continue our considerations about salvation and
the afterlife in part by examining ancient Hebrew notions of salvation and the
afterlife particularly as a related to interpreting some Biblical passages,
that we have read and discussed.

Coffeehouse: Thanks
to all those who attended the Coffeehouse on November 24th to see
some of our UCF youth perform. A special thanks to Richard Blumenthal, Lizzy
Price, and Rachel Mou-Thiel for their performances that night. We are blessed
with such talented youth at our church. And we especially appreciate those who
volunteered their time in planning, setting up, baking, and cleaning up that
night which allowed the event possible to be possible in the first place. $100
of the money raised that night went toward the youth fund in support of our
youth program.
Other
fundraisers: We
also want to thank all those who supported the youth program by purchasing
advent wreaths and candles, luminaries, and Enjoy the City Books. It often
seems that we are perpetually trying to sell you things. We appreciate your
continued support of our efforts to raise the money necessary to undertake the
special trips and events that we plan for our youth. We feel that these events,
while often expensive, are an important part of our youth programming and hope
that they will provide opportunities to spur spiritual growth for our teenagers
either by exposing them to new people and ideas or by giving them a chance to
serve the needs of others.
