UNITED CHURCH NEWS

January, 2006

“A community of faith providing nurture, strength, and direction for living today in God’s world.”

   From the Interim Pastor’s Pen

Yesterday members of the congregation gathered for the annual financial meeting of your congregation.  Helpful and accurate information was shared on the state of the church’s finances.  Some highlights are as follows:

Financial Reports indicated that the anticipated income for 2006 is slightly higher than the income for 2005 but comes well below the anticipated expenses.  To address this disparity the congregation, following the recommendation of the Church Board, approved a deficit budget with the understanding that funds from the Estate, Manse or New Horizon funds may be tapped if additional funds are needed in 2006 for operating expenses.  This is not a practice that is desired and not a decision that was made without much consideration and discussion.  Although worship attendance has remained steady, emphasis was placed on the need to increase the number of congregants and focus on stewardship.

We were encouraged to hear of the progress being made to implement many of the ideas that emerged through the Mission Study/New Vision process of 2005.  Cindy Burke mentioned the following 10 items.

●    Midweek Bible study will begin this month (Thursday nights)

●    Children and youth involved in most Sunday services

●    Devotional materials promoted and distributed

●    Grounds/parking lot concerns are being addressed

●    Suggestion box is up and running

●    “Opportunities for involvement” list has been created

●    Retreats for congregation is being planned

●    Membership involvement encouraged

●    Youth opportunities to discuss life issues taking place on Sundays

●    Work groups are being identified to address special issues

The Capital Campaign “From Strength to Strength” has received pledge payments of $129,155 through the end of 2005.  Projects completed to date are the: (1) renovation and preservation of the stain glass windows; and (2) upgrade and renovation of the kitchen facilities.  The following three projects continue to be underway:  (1) establishment of a permanent Capital Reserve Fund; (2) church accessibility – Denny Baldwin overseeing this endeavor; and (3) audio-visual system – Jim Spencer is chairing the committee.

A detailed written report was provided on the status of the Jubilee House.  Denny Baldwin, Lois Spitzer, Joanne Birge, and Norm Hatt continue to provide oversight to this project.  It is clear that the Jubilee House will continue to need financial support in 2006.  At the February meeting of the Church Board a Work Group will be appointed to explore future possibilities for this ministry.

I came away from yesterday’s meeting grateful for the effort the Church Board has made to expand communication among its own members and throughout the congregation.  I am also aware of the effort the entire congregation has made in working through the various tasks required during these times of transition.  I appreciate the steps each of you are taking to strengthen our mission and ministry.  Work well done.

Worship, Music & Spiritual Life

HYMN CORNER - February 5th Joyful Sign Choir to interpret Be Thou My Vision

This 8th century Irish hymn is a prayer for the vision of God throughout life.  The text is a personal prayer as we acknowledge God to be my light...my treasure...Ruler of all.  The lovely Irish melody SLANE with its ABCD form (all four lines are different) enhances the text.  Slane is a hill ten miles from Tara in County Meath , Ireland, associated with St. Patricks struggle against Druid priests. (Diana Sanchez, 1989, Hymns of the U. Methodist Hymnal)

Valentine Caroling - Feb. 5th

Members of the Cherub Choir and Children’s choir will visit some homebound members to deliver Valentines and a song during Enrichment Time on Sunday, Feb. 5th. The two choirs will be commissioned in worship before leaving.

Liturgist Training on Sunday, February 5th immediately following worship.

Both seasoned and novice speakers are invited to a liturgist training. A light lunch will be provided.

Christy Perry Tuohey, a broadcaster, host of Religion Now, and instructor at SU will provide helpful information on how our words can assist others in the worship of God.

For more information contact Kathleen Waters or Kathy Bohnsack.

Laity Sunday, Feb. 12th Sing of Water and the Spirit, Sing of Word and Table

February 12th’s worship for Laity Sunday is being planned and will be led by Linda Hickok and Barbara Johnson of the Spiritual Gifts and Lay Ministries Committee (in coordination with the Worship and Spiritual Life Committee). The service will be a Hymn Festival on the themes of Baptism and Communion.  During the service there will be an opportunity to participate in a congregational reaffirmation of baptism.  The ancient custom involves touching the water in the baptismal font and reaffirming the vows made either by parents or personally made at baptism or confirmation. Whatever our tradition, this will be a day to remember our baptism and be grateful.  In fact, you can remember it every day – it is said that each morning Martin Luther placed his hand on his head and said in gratitude, “I am baptized.”

Ash Wednesday Agape Meal & Worship - March 1st

World Day of Prayer - Friday, March 3 at United Church

A Global Ecumenical Movement of Informed Prayer and Prayerful Action

9:30 AM registration, fellowship, and worship in our sanctuary, coordinated by Lorraine Dimon.  The World Day of Prayer worship service has a special annual theme. For 2006 the theme is:

SIGNS OF THE TIMES written by Christian women of South Africa.

World Day of Prayer is a worldwide movement of Christian women of many traditions who come together to observe a common day of prayer each year, and who, in many countries, have a continuing relationship in prayer and service. It is a movement initiated and carried out by women in more than 170 countries and regions.   Through World Day of Prayer, women are encouraged

 ·    to become aware of the whole world and no longer live in isolation

 ·    to be enriched by the faith experience of Christians of other countries and cultures

 ·    to take up the burdens of other people and pray with and for them

 ·    to become aware of their talents and use them in the service of society.

February Events

Friday thru Sunday 10-12th: Night Watch in New York City at St. Paul’s the Divine Cathedral

Sunday the 26thWork on remodeling Youth Room

January 6th was the first day of Epiphany.  The wandering wise men of the east followed a star through fatigue and demanding conditions to give reverence to the King. Those few wisemen kept their faith through perseverance and unconditional love.  They followed their star to the savior.

Sunday School

This youth has continued their long faith voyage to follow their star to Christ.  We started Sunday school on the first Sunday of epiphany, and we discussed faith.  Throughout this month we are trying to get a deeper meaning to our faith.  We are trying to explore our personal faith and what it means to follow Jesus.  Why are we called to be fishers of people?  January has quickly come to an end, and we are still confused.  Yet we learned in Sunday school through the passage Psalms 119:105 that, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”  Scripture can be used as a sort of road map or a guide; additionally, we all can use each other to get through this journey with our eyes fixed on our star or light that leads us to the savior.

Fundraising

I am writing about lights, stars, and personal journeys, so it is quite fitting to put in something about Nightwatch.  As you all know, we are going to Nightwatch February 10-12.  We have constantly raised money since the fall.  One particular event this month was the Bread, Soup and Chili sale, which by the way, was a tremendous success.  Thanks to everyone involved, especially Lisa Graniero who coordinated the event!   All of your contributions will give Nightwatchers an opportunity to rejoice through fellowship with other churches, and help further our own personal relationship with Jesus.  Also, I find this to be a wonderful opportunity for the youth and seekers to get more acquainted with one another.  We will go with an open mind and much exuberance to celebrate the love that Christ has given to all of us.  Now, this is my first ever Nightwatch, so I really do not know what to expect; however, I feel that this will be a wonderful experience, and a great opportunity for me to further enhance my relationship with the youth, and those that attend Nightwatch.  I especially feel that this experience will further develop my personal relationship with Christ.

Seekers

Lastly, seekers met for the first time January 22nd 2006.  The Seeker confirmation class kicked off with a nice dinner and the Seekers were able to convene and get more familiar with their mentors.  This was my first opportunity to really get to sit down and meet the 7-8th graders that were part of this journey.  This group seems truly enthusiastic about this whole process, and I am too.  They are a wonderful gift that will progress, grow and mature into followers of Christ.  I think I will learn much from this experience too.  In the aforementioned, we are all following our star.  We are hoping to be Disciples of Christ.  I am excited to see this youth where they are now, and I pray that we all continue to (like the wise men) follow our star to Jesus through our ever-enduring devotion and love.

Tim Underwood

Director of Youth Ministries

Thanks from the Youth and Youth Committee-

Many, many thanks to all the folks who have helped the Jr/Sr high youth organize and carry out the fund raising activities over the past few months.  It started with the bake sale in November (we had an incredible array of baked goods and raised over $500).  In December, Cindy Rosbrook organized our luminaria sale- Carolyn Gordon helped with procuring the candles- and we raised over $1200.  In January we offered up the soup and bread sale (organized by Lisa Graniero)  Many thanks to all who baked or made soup -  and what a success that event was!  We raised over $500 once again.  At the end of this month we are sponsored in the congregational meeting lunch (organized by Kim Cherry) and I expect that you will once again WOW us with your generosity.  We have had such a wonderful outpouring of support from everyone in the congregation…whether you made a baked item or soup, bought a luminary or purchased those baked goods and soup, you have made it possible for the youth to get to Night Watch in February via bus.  THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!

Toddler Toy Round Up

The Children’s Committee is looking to restock the Crib and Nursery Room with toys for kids 6 months- 5 years. The toys should be gently used and in good working condition- puzzles, blocks, toys, Fisher Price figures, etc.  No stuffed animals, please. Keep in mind small pieces may pose a choking hazard for the younger kids.  If we are unable to use them we’ll donate them to a charitable organization.  If you’d like them back instead, please let us know.  Please leave in the Parent’s Place Sundays through February with your name on them.  Questions? Call Martha Ketcham at 637-7709 or see her or Judy Sunday mornings.  Thanks!

Biblemania needs you!  We are in the initial planning stages of this annual overnight for kids in 1st through 6th grades.  This year’s theme is “Women of the Bible” and is being held April 28-29.  Work with other UCF parents in planning the theme, crafts, activities, food or logistics.  Many hands make light work!  Contact Judy Spencer or Martha Ketcham with questions.

FINANCIAL INFORMATION

Financial statistics for the month of December and for 2005 are as follows:

December

Year to Date

Income

$26,143.

$261,248

Expenses

$22,585.

$278,339

Difference

$3,558

($17,091)

At the end of December, the difference between income and expenses for the year 2005 was $17,091. Thanks to those of you who made an effort to bring your pledges up to date.   This represents a smaller deficit than November, but still a deficit.

To compensate for this deficit and to avoid starting the year in the red, the board approved moving money from the Estate Fund to the General Fund, as well as canceling an Estate Fund loan to the General Fund. The total amount of money moved in 2006 for this purpose was $16,339.

For 2006 the budget presented at the annual meeting was approved as presented.  This budget is not balanced, and shows a deficit of almost $12,000.  The Finance Committee and the board will keep track of income and expenses for 2006 and will use this space to keep the congregation informed.

Contribution Statements

Contribution statements for envelope giving during 2005 were mailed the week of January 23rd.  If for some reason you have not received yours or have any questions about your statement please speak with Scott Manuel, treasurer or Dick Clark, Financial Secretary.

When reviewing your statement please note the following regarding the Capital Fund drive:

If your Capital Fund Pledge appears to be under budget, please remember that the Campaign went officially from July 2003 until June 2006.  Dates were entered incorrectly indicating an end date of December 2005.  We will be happy to accept your donations in 2006.

CHURCH AND SOCIETY

Submitted by Cara Steiner

Important Volunteer Opportunity at the United Way: The EITC: You've Earned It! initiative brings together volunteers to help low income parents get the often-missed tax refunds available through the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC).  The initiative is a collaboration led by United Way of Central New York, partnered with local businesses, not-for-profits, churches, etc, in which volunteers work to assist families who need it most to apply for the EITC. The hours are flexible, the training is free, and the families really need our help. In addition to bringing more income into needy families, it is anticipated that it will, according to the United Way, help bring millions of dollars into the local economy. Information about this initiative is available on the Church and Society bulletin board in the hallway across from the church office, or visit the United Way web site. Training is still available through an on-line web site, and volunteers are needed in positions other than actually preparing tax returns. To learn how you can assist working families get back the dollars they've earned contact the United Way at 315-428-2211 or e-mail at volopps@unitedway-cny.org.

Peacemaking Conferences Summer, 2006:  As was reported in the September, 2005 UCF Newsletter, our congregation signed onto the Presbyterian Commitment to Peacemaking and became a supportive congregation of the Baptist Peace Fellowship of North America (BPFNA). This summer both the BPFNA and the Presbyterian Peacemaking Program are holding annual conferences. The BPFNA conference will be held July 10 - 15 in Atlanta, Georgia based on the theme, Becoming the Beloved Community, and will include times of worship in the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church, home of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Information about speakers for conference is available on the BPFNA website (www.bpfna.org), where a detailed conference schedule will soon be available.  The summer conference of the Presbyterian Peacemaking Program will be held in Estes Park, Colorado from July 22 - 27.  The conference title is Unmasking Power: Seeking the Faces of Peace.  For more information: www.pcusa.org/peacemaking/conferences/2006.htm

Some financial assistance might be available to help someone in the congregation interested in attending one of these conferences. See a member of the Church and Society Committee.

A Brief Statement of Faith from the Presbyterian conference literature inspires all of us:

In a broken and fearful world

the Spirit gives us courage

to pray without ceasing,

to witness among all peoples to Christ as Lord and Savior,

to unmask idolatries in Church and culture,

to hear the voices of peoples long silenced,

and to work with others for justice, freedom, and peace.

In gratitude to God, empowered by the Spirit,

we strive to serve Christ in our daily tasks

and to live holy and joyful lives,

even as we watch for God's new heaven and new earth

praying, "Come, Lord Jesus!"

OPPORTUNITIES FOR MISSION

Church World Service “Tools of Hope/Blanket Program” Sunday

Submitted by Barbara Johnson on behalf of the Mission Committee

The Sunday before Valentine’s Day will be our church’s annual day to join with other caring congregations in sharing our love with less fortunate children of God.  It seems that ever since the tsunami struck just before Christmas 2004 our world, including our own country, has been hit with an unusually large number of natural disasters, not to mention wars and mine explosions.  Sadly enough, the list could go on and on.  As a result the requests for help go on and on as well.  Many of us have stretched our own resources in order to help our brothers and sisters at home and around the world during these tragic events.  And through it all, Church World Service continues to coordinate the efforts of its 36 member denominations in global and local disaster relief.  Blankets, tents, and other emergency supplies have been provided immediately to those in need. Tools of Hope include new wells to deliver safe clean water; hoes, shovels, rakes, and chicken coops with chickens for rural families; and fishing nets for those along the coasts -  just to name a few of the projects that provide ongoing care to help get people back on their feet once the immediate crisis is addressed.  The costs of these items run from $5 for a good heavy blanket to $3,770 for a village well.  No gift is too small to make a big difference in someone’s life.  Especially during these times of many requests we can’t emphasize that enough.  If five people each gave one dollar, a blanket for an earthquake victim in Pakistan would become a priceless gift!

Beginning with their first Sunday in January, the Church School started to add their collections together to see how much love they could send to some hurting children.  Soon they will be sharing their “clothesline of blankets” to show what even the youngest among us can do to help.  Won’t you join with the children of our church to see how many lives we can touch with love on this Valentine’s Day?

Our collection will be dedicated on Sunday, February 12 as part of our Laity Sunday service.  Special envelopes will be available prior to that date.  Or your check can be written to United Church with the designation Church World Service on the memo line.
